There are tons of internet money making opportunities out there, and the list grows daily. You have affiliate programs, multi-level marketing programs, investment programs, pay for offers programs, etc. The list goes on. Some of them offer the promise of a quick fortune; some of them offer sustained income. The technique that I most often recommend is niche marketing.

Niche marketing is a very simple concept: you find a niche, develop a website around that niche, get people to visit your niche site, and find a way to collect money from those people. Seems pretty simple, but with many seemingly simple concepts, there are things that work and things that don’t. One niche marketing technique that does work is called “article marketing”.

Article marketing is the practice of writing articles and using those articles to drive traffic to your niche sites. That traffic is then converted to income by means of direct sales, affiliate sales, or advertising revenues. I personally use a combination of affiliate sales and ad revenues. These concepts can be a little tough to grasp for a new niche marketer, but I’ll post some resources at the end of the article that can help you. Here’s how it works (in a nutshell).

  • Find a Niche – Finding a niche can be difficult for a beginner. I recommend starting with something that interests you and researching the marketability of that niche. A good tool is the Google Adwords tool. You can use that tool to gauge how many people search for keywords related to that niche. They can also give you an idea of how much money people pay to advertise those keywords.
  • Get Your Keywords – Decide on a main keyword related to your niche, as well as some secondary keywords.
  • Start a Blog – Start a blog around your niche and write articles that target your keywords. Post these articles to your blog.
  • Get Traffic to Your Blog – This can be the hard part. You will want to find ways to get other sites to link to your blog. The two easiest ways to do that are by submitting articles to article directories and asking other blogs for link trades.
  • Set Up Adsense – Adsense is free. You set up an account with Google. You agree to post their ads on your site, and they agree to pay you when people click on those adds.
  • Set Up Affiliate Accounts – Another great way to earn income from your niche site is to set up affiliate accounts with vendors that offer products that relate to your niche. People go to your site, looking for information about your niche, they see an affiliate ad for a product that they are looking for, they buy that product, and you get a commission.

The great part about this type of niche marketing is that they are inexpensive to get going, easy to maintain, and offer long lasting, residual income. The money doesn’t start flowing in from the first day, and it takes some work to get started, but that is true with any business. If you do it right, you will get back what you put in.

If you choose to work from home, you will more than likely have to learn how to market products or service online and unfortunately, everyone is not cut out for online niche marketing. Many people have this idea that you can join any get rich quick scheme, place a few ads on the internet and then start raking in huge amounts of cash. It doesn’t work that way and people need to understand that very clearly.

Here are a few questions to ask before getting involved with online marketing:

1.) Do you give up easily?

Just like any other business, most people do not become instant success stories overnight. It takes time and effort to make money in this industry. If someone joins an online business opportunity and quits shortly after, this industry may not be for that person.

2.) Are you willing to put in the work to market your business effectively?

This involves advertising your business which usually involves promoting a website or affiliate link. To make money online, your website has to be seen by many people. Everyone who sees your website or business opportunity will not buy from you or join your business opportunity either, but you still must get it out there to be seen by as many people as possible.

3.) Are you willing to follow up with potential prospects?

If you can commit to steps 1 and 2, you will generate prospects for your business, but to convert those prospects over to sales or signups, you must follow up with them effectively. This involves effective email advertising or follow up by phone. Statistics show that people who follow up by phone effectively will have much higher results than those who don’t. Thanks to online marketing, following up by phone is becoming a thing of the past. Many systems incorporate system mailers or autoresponders that will allow you to easily follow up with your prospects. There will always be some needed manual intervention on your part. Whatever the case may be, you must be willing to take advantage of certain tools to contact your prospects.

4.) Are you willing to learn new things?

Many people get irritated when they learn that they actually have to work hard when it comes to marketing online. This may involve learning a little html or php, setting up autoresponders, copying and pasting text, setting up payment processors to accept payments and other things. New tools are constantly being developed to simplify how home businesses are ran so it’s always good to step up to the plate and learn as much as you can. You don’t have to be a brain, but the people who are willing to learn and out that knowledge to use will have much better results than those who don’t.

If you are lazy, give up easily, complain a lot, point the finger when things don’t go your way and are not an active person, you may want to step away from online marketing. Most successful online marketers already had determined mindsets before they ever wanted to make money online. Take this for instance. Just do a search for any popular online business opportunity and you’ll find post or articles written by many people who blame the company for them not making any money. Whats puzzling is that these same people will write articles complaining about something not realizing that their article or forum post hit the top of the search engines. If they would have only used their time and effort writing articles to promote their business, they may have had more success.
