Only those who could afford personal computers and modems were able to enjoy the benefits of being connected to the internet. As computers have become cheaper and more powerful, the amount of things that use the internet has increase exponentially. The internet is no longer considered a convenience by many people, but it is often seen as more of a necessity.   However, with the ever increasing amount of people and devices that are using the internet, the currently low prices for fast internet connections cannot last for very long.

More people are using it

The internet is no longer used by only a few wealthy engineers and large companies. Even those on the lowest tax bracket expect to have an internet connection in their home.  With this number of people who are using the internet, there is more resources used up globally than ever before. The number of people that are using the internet is not expected to get smaller any time soon. As the economies in India, China, and other developing nations continue to develop, the amount of people using the internet is expected to begin growing exponentially.

Limited Resources

The internet can only transfer a limited amount of data at one time. You can think of it as something similar to a pipe. A given pipe can only manage to hold a certain amount of water. Just as the pipe can fill up with water, the virtual pipes of the internet can be filled up with electronic data. Unlike the text chat programs that people used to use for the internet, 3D games use up a significant portion of these limited internet resources. As the internal structure of the internet must be upgraded, the cost for this will be passed down to the consumers, causing the price of the internet to shoot up considerably.

Enjoy it while it lasts

There is no way that the currently low prices of the internet can last forever, but enjoy it while it lasts. Current ISPs allow people to download significant amounts of data for very little money, allowing unlimited streaming video and downloads in the process.  Without any limits on the amount of data you can download, the internet becomes a tool which can be used for nearly everything.
