Google is waging a war on junk links, this has been going on for sometime and they are getting better and better at it, and so there are major SEO changes that went on this year that in turn created a whole new set of link building strategies (courtesy of JR’s Internet Marketing blog) for long term and solid rankings today and beyond.

The main job of SEO is getting links to websites, which are viewed as votes for authority and quality content for those websites, this information is used by Google to determine the rankings of said websites for particular keywords. All of this starts with the content on a website, because in reality it is difficult to get natural quality links when the content on the site is junk. Many webmasters believe that they can slap up a site without paying much attention as to the quality of their content and then go out get a bunch of crappy links and rank for various key terms. Yes, this used to work, get 500 directory links, 1000 article site links and bam, there is your site on page 1.

Well, those days are over, and today it really takes a lot more than that to rank a site long term, these days you have to actually DESERVE the rankings. Maybe the spammers ruined those “easy links” for us, or maybe it is as it should be, because in reality, when you get manual crappy links it’s implied that your content is not worthy of those high quality freely given links, and believe me, Google’s algorithm is designed to know the difference. It is also designed to do a pretty good job of deciphering manual links vs natural links.

Today, more than ever, Google is looking to quality relevant content in their search results. There are many novice webmasters that still chase useless and harmful links, believing that it will get them long term strong rankings, and instead wind up in the Google black hole or worse penalized and lacking any kind of traffic that matters.

Profile Links – Angela’s Links, Paul’s Links, Sick Submitter, etc…all useless and you should never use them to link directly to your money sites.
Directories - Low quality crappy directories are a useless waste of time and most of them are considered spam sites.
Article Marketing in Mass Amounts – Forget using article submission software, most of those article sites are spammy content farms, useless for rankings, especially for new sites.
Link Pages – This is one of the worst things you can do for your site, an obvious link scheme full of reciprocal links with the goal of gaming search engines, BAD NEWS!!
Unnatural link profiles, including, using the same anchor text over and over, creating tons of links at once, using link wheels, content farms, excessive interlinking within sites on the same IP addresses.

Don’t Expect Immediate Success With Internet Marketing

I learned my lessons about internet marketing in a way that most people don’t. I wasn’t interested in making a bunch of money online (though that would be nice), I was interested in getting my sites ranking as high as possible on Google for a brick and mortar business I had (a law firm). It was learning about law firm internet marketing where I realized a universal lesson – you can’t expect immediate success.

If you know nothing about internet marketing, the first lesson you need to know is there is a direct proportion between the competitiveness of a keyword (i.e. how popular a search term it is) and the length of time it will take for you to reach the number one spot in Google for that search term. For example, my traffic ticket website reached number one about 6 months earlier than my DUI site – and I was putting much more work into the DUI site. There are just a lot more people that want to be number one for those kinds of keywords.

And one other thing I learned was one law firm website review wasn’t going to vault me to number one. It takes slow, steady work doing the right things at the right time to be successful. It is possible, but it’s not nearly as easy as any one makes it sound. You don’t wake up one day with great search results (actually you do, but it can be after months of work with absolutely no progress).

Whether you are trying to create an internet empire for your brick and mortar business or an online business, the number one thing you need to understand is that it takes time and work to be successful. After time you might be able to slow down a bit, but at the beginning it is going to take a lot of hours (and a lot of writing) before you reach the levels you are hoping to reach.
