Those of us who earn our living from niche marketing on the internet know that the single biggest contributor to our success is keyword research. Pick the wrong keyword and either you will get no traffic to your money site, or the traffic that does go to your site won’t make any money for you. Choose the right keyword and you will have a ton of visitors and make oodles of money.

So what’s the proper way to do the research? Well, if you are already a member of The Keyword Academy, you already know the answer to that question. For the rest of you, you may be shocked by what I am going to tell you next. Ready?

Truth – 99% of what you have heard about keyword research is at least 75% wrong!

Yep, you heard correctly. Most people get it wrong. Now it is true that you can use the Google keyword tool to find keywords that have little competition, find a clickbank product to promote relating to that keyword, and build a site around it. The truth is though that unless you are talented enough to write killer pre-sale copy (or can hire someone that is), your conversion rates will be terrible. The other problem is that, according to these methods, even if you find a keyword that has “little” competition, these competing sites can still be PR4 or 5. That is all but certain doom for your efforts.

The best method for choosing profitable keywords completely ignores the keyword tool’s “competition” rating. It focuses on how much search traffic the keyword gets and how profitable that keyword is. Then it looks at not how much competition there is for that word or phrase, but how tough that competition is. That’s what really matters, right? I don’t mind if there are 20,000,000 competing sites for my keyword if the top 4 or 5 sites are all PR1 and 2, because with proper SEO (on site and off), I can outrank them.

So, how do you find a keyword that gets a lot of searches, has high earnings potential, and weak sites ranking in the top 10? There is a very specific formula for it, and the good news is that a very small percentage of niche marketers know this formula. My point is this: if you want your website to create revenue, you’re going to need more than good information and some spiffy fonts; you’re going to need some publicity. You’re going to need someone with a good, widely-recognized name. This is why it’s far more realistic to make money with Google.

Google has several ways of helping your site make money. One of these is the most obvious; it puts sites on its search engine results. This means that if you’ve already got a good site, the web crawler has probably already noticed you, and is posting you on relevant searches. (If not, Google does offer a chance to submit the site yourself, but some have complained that Google takes too long to act on this.)

One of the more effective programs Google has to offer is AdWords. If you’ve got a site that’s designed to generate funds (think sales or merchandising,) then what you need most is for that site to be seen. Somebody’s bound to think your idea is a good one – if only they could find you. AdWords posts ads on relevant search results, linking people to your site. Whenever a viewer clicks on one of these ads, it takes them to your site. You owe Google a small fee for bringing them there.

AdSense is a closely related program that allows Google to post ads on your site. These ads are for other sites, but you still make money off of them, because you’re one of the people who get paid for the advertising every time it gets clicked on. You won’t make as much as Google, of course, but you can get a little money on the side (or sidebar, rather.)

The blogging community is notorious for harboring cheap bastards. And even if you manage to pick their pockets one time or another, how often can you churn those ebooks out until the well runs dry. And then you’ll have to find some other clueless artistic types to leach off from. Have some sense. Few artists can make a living in the real world and even fewer can make a living online blogging as well.

The only way you will make money online is if you ditch the blogging gig and come up with a viable online business idea that will fulfill customers’ needs to buy a service or a product. This is what internet marketing is all about. You don’t have to convince them to buy because there is already a built in interest. Oh, there will a lot of screeching from the liberal type that of “but I’m an artist”, “I want to be creative”, “I don’t want to sell out”, “I don’t want to promote crap”. For this I answer you don’t have to put anything on your niche web sites that you’re not proud of. Ethics, values and internet marketing are not mutually exclusive.
