Business courses, business management courses, management courses, and a full range of high-level and very progressive education options are out doorway to a world of changing technology and business opportunities we don’t know are even available yet. Global business and technology are changing so fast; we can’t even know the playing field when we enter study. Twitter exploded in a couple of years after being a snap plan for a fallback of a failing coding group with heavy breathing investors at the door. Facebook exploded across the planet in 5 years and has changed the paradigm of content, sharing, marketing and communications. An idea can actually change the world today. Here is a look at what a student of business or international marketing should be doing to stay ahead of the wave.

· Live it. To be successful today, probably like anytime in the history of people, we need to live our profession and we have to be passionate. In today’s world, change is faster than ever before. A company can come together in minutes. Communications and travel are colliding, and technological improvements continue to improve on a rapid scale. Leaps in understanding and approach happen more often than they ever did. Improvements and developments in technology, business, processes, value and execution are not just being passed on and developing with the logic of Darwin’s theory of change… We are seeing radical jumps and advances more often and those jumps are further. While we learn, we really do need to think outside and beyond the box.

· Previous is not always right. Just because something makes up the core of education, and it makes up what we are learning does not mean we should think, or believe, it is right, and something we should employ. Keeping a keen eye, understanding mistakes have been made, and what we are learning is flawed in the first place, is the only way to take what we study to the next level. Windows 8 (released as an operating system for tablets entitled the Re-Creation of Windows), for example, is a blatant admission of admitting a good deal of the past and what we thought we knew, had to be left behind, so we could move ahead.

· Study is study, and is designed to be criticized. If we cannot criticize what we are learning, we are lemmings following the piper off the edge. To make serious and fundamental growth and change, sometimes, and many of the times, we may contradict what is previous. It took way to long for it to be accepted the world was not flat, and centuries of human development and freedom were lost due to refusal by those in power to accept they were wrong. Arguably, we cannot say anything is right or correct. Sub-nuclear physics and the Chaos Theory crumbled Newton physics to dust. The deeper we look everything changes. We can parallel these examples with technology, companies, business and the way we create. We don’t have to be a rebel, but we do need the freedom to think beyond what is accepted and standard for today.

If you are going to make a difference in the world of business, communications and global technology, you are going to go against some grain, and you are going to do something different. There is nothing wrong with being extra-ordinary, and never feel you should be obliged to conform. Great company owners and drivers are those who will encourage and accelerate your progressive and positive attitude. Keep moving forward, and be very aware you are studying a seed. Grow your ideas and take that knowledge to the next level.

Small business owners probably wonder if they should launch a website. There really is not much time for such a project with all other startup preparations. On the other hand, a steady Internet presence is an excellent ecommerce solution as, today, most consumers shop online.

There are several good reasons why small businesses should maintain a quality website.

1. Professional Appearance – A well-maintained site shows customers that you are a legitimate business. Web-users will respect the fact that you are sharing important details about your enterprise.

2. Larger Profits – One of the first things modern shoppers look for on a business card is a URL. They want to review products online, even if they intend to buy the items locally at a physical store. You could lose a lot of business without a website. Always list product prices. It will show consumers that you are more affordable than your competitors.

3. Savings – Try to imagine how much money you can save by not having to print flyers, pay for advertising in newspapers, and sending out direct mail. There is no need for traditional promotional material as you can announce sales events on your website. Send out monthly newsletters through email, and your customers will know exactly when you are discounting merchandise. Make your site even more attractive by publishing coupons, which shoppers can print and use at your store. As you can see, having a website is an awesome ecommerce solution.

4. Easy Interaction – It is much easier to communicate with customers through the Internet. Answer emails promptly. Add a comment page to your website, and you will receive feedback. Use the statements and suggestions to improve your venture.

5. Double Sales – Even when you first had no intension on selling online, you can always change your mind. Add a shopping cart and a PayPal payment option, and you are good to go. No need to set up a second site – unless you are really eager.

If you’re an office manager, you’ll be well aware of the importance of OHS and proper maintenance of all aspects of your business premises. You may not, however, be aware of some far less obvious OHS risks in one of the most familiar parts of the office- The office furniture. The ergonomic approach to OHS tends to be a bit too blasé in some cases, and the real risks can be covered in a sugary, feel-good approach which is quite inappropriate for the actual level of risk.

The big issue- Office furniture can do ergonomic damage on the scale of a major medical condition. Slipped disks, spinal injuries, RSI, nerve damage, you name it, there’s a long list of potentially serious OHS issues related to furniture, and they’re major ticket items in any actual compensation claim.

For example:

An architect employed by a government department doing regular consultative calls to clients suffered a serious neck injury, simply as a result of a combination of old furniture and being on the phone using a computer.

An office worker with 20 years’ experience suffered cumulative injuries after decades in various forms of dilapidated office chairs and workplace environments and nearly suffered a slipped disk in the spine. The issue was corrected in time, and the main issue was a damaged nerve in the elbow according to nerve conduction tests.

An administrative worker was effectively made an invalid largely as a result of accumulated injuries in a poor ergonomic environment in a few years.

If you’re seeing multiple signs of major OHS-related compensation claims, you’re dead right- These were “career injuries” sustained in the workplace, and the employers, naturally, didn’t have a leg to stand on. These are the realities of ergonomics in the workplace, without the “cute” approach. They’re expensive, dangerous, and in the case of the administrative worker, who was a teenager just out of high school, heart rending.

Getting a grip on good ergonomic policies

The fact is that these situations are 100% avoidable. The real need is for good quality office furniture and an alert, responsive policy in relation to the issues.

The needs are:

Strict quality control on office furniture purchases- Never mind focusing on budget-based debates about cheap or expensive furniture, quality is the difference between an almost indefensible OHS claim and a good, productive business environment.

Clear guidelines for ergonomic practices- If a staff member spots a defective chair, workstation or other hazard, they’re doing your business a huge favour in real dollar terms. Any furniture which isn’t up to standard must go.

Condition of furniture- Bizarrely enough, decrepit and even unclean furniture is sometimes kept in operation long after its expiry date. If normal commercial cleaning services can’t clean furniture, it’s too tacky to be allowed to remain in the workplace. (Note: Stained areas also mean the furniture materials are in very bad condition. If seating becomes contaminated with fluids, it becomes uneven, creating a possible ergonomic situation.)

The absolute bottom line- Don’t take chances with “iffy” furniture. OHS claims based on ergonomics issues cost millions every year, quite unnecessarily. Get the best and keep an eye on quality, and you’ll be OK.

Let’s say you’re a relatively small business and you want to establish a blog. Perhaps this is going to be the official blog for your company, or maybe you want to start a blog under your own name, to help establish you as an authority figure in your industry. It may even be a mix of both. The entire concept of business blogging can be confusing, but if you are able to give your readers a little insight into your company and your industry, you can use that blog to build reputation for your small business.

Goals of a Business Blog
Blogs have the reputation of being a little less formal than your typical business press release or website, and therefore this is an opportunity to add a little human element to your website. Don’t try to write an anonymous blog; instead, allow this to be the place where you can introduce members of your company as human being, and let them write in a more relaxed style. They should still be professionals that clearly know what they are talking about, but throwing in references to their own hobbies or why they got into this industry are greatly appreciated by the readers.

Think About the Industry As a Whole
A common trap that business blogs fall into is that they only write about things happening in their own business. As a result, after a year or so they find that the other things they publish on a regular basis are rehashes of press releases they already sent out. There’s little to nothing new on the blogs, the writing is stiff, and soon no one cares.

To prevent this, allow your head blog writer to talk more broadly about the industry as a whole. Talk about the gaps you saw in the industry, and how this led to the creation of the company. Discuss your love of the industry, and the little pet peeves that are so common in it that drive you nuts (the readers will know what you are talking about and agree, guaranteed).

Don’t talk badly about other companies, but instead try to explain your own point of view for entering the industry when you did. Discuss the problems you are facing, and how you are thinking about solving them. Doing this will make your company more social, and will not only increase how you look to other people, but may even provide you with the opportunity to meet other people in the industry and connect with them as well.

Don’t just throw away the idea of a blog and put together a list of your company press releases. Use it as a chance to really socialize and connect with the community as a whole. It may not seem like it at first, but customers will ultimately arise from what you do.

At some point, you’re going to need a business software upgrade. If you’re running your own business, you need to look at the options carefully. It is possible to get excellent business software, including enterprise software which can do a lot for your business management, business planning and your administration and accountancy. Getting this software is a lot easier than it might seem, too.

Best practice for business software upgrades

The first thing to do is to define exactly what you need. Your existing software is now on the threshold of being obsolete in terms of your business needs, so you’ll need to do a bit of forward thinking.

Do you need?

Small business accounting software

Simple business accounting software

Ecommerce accounting software

Automatic warehouse software

Small business ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software

Retail business accounting software

These are all operational considerations, and you’ll also need to integrate your software for better efficiency in administration. Integrated business software systems are a real step up from the old multiple systems/ glue it all together for your reports approach, which is now well and truly on the way out.

The best thing to do is to have a chat with your tax accountants about your needs, and cover that angle first. Any new system you introduce will have to be compliant with business and tax records requirements. Your tax accountant will also be able to pin down any issues with your accounting practices for your expanded business in advance, which will save you any fiddling with your admin and financial reporting.

Selecting your business software

The next stage of the process is to talk to a business software provider. These people can give you customized software tailored to meet your needs and also manage the integration of your business information systems. This is actually a pretty simple, straightforward process, and you may find that there are a range of better options for doing your business while you’re at it.

Best practice in this area is:

A fully integrated enterprise software package- This is a management tool like no other. You can access information off one screen, get reports instantly, and keep track of operational business as well.

Customized business accounting software package- This dovetails directly in to your enterprise software, and makes financial management a lot easier.

Business plan software- The core business information of your business plan, including financial planning, risk management, all properly formatted for business purposes.

Ecommerce accounting software- If you’re doing a lot of business online, this is a must. You’ll find that your ecommerce work becomes more efficient, and these packages also remove the “hard labour” element from the accounting process.

Retailing accounts software- Another major data load on any business system, this software will cover both accounting fundamentals and deal with the tax component, seamlessly.

Warehousing software- Invaluable in terms of getting control over the stock movements, invoicing and ordering, and integrated into an easily accessible form on your new business management system. You wouldn’t believe the amount of time this saves.

You can have a fully loaded new system, with training and support, in a few days. Sounds good? You’ll be astonished.

Business operations are critically dependent on positive movement of cash. Unfortunately, you can’t always pay your bills from sales and profits. As a business owner, you need to become the master of your company’s cash flow. You also need to control costs and have a good collection system set up for your accounts receivable. Additionally, you need some solid payment schemes for accounts payable. Inventory you carry can tie you down tremendously, so it’s good to stay on top of it with inventory management software. Cash flow isn’t the simplest thing to manage, but here are some tips to help you.

Work out your cash conversion cycle to start keeping your cash flow under control. The length of time it takes for resources you put into inventory, production, and sales efforts to turn back into usable cash is the cash conversion cycle. The cycle starts when you sell merchandise to customers and purchase inventory for your company; it ends when you have received payments from customers and when you have paid for the goods you bought on credit. In order to take the right steps toward speeding up your cash conversion cycle, you need to figure out how long your individual company’s cycle takes.

Establish accounts receivable guidelines that will ensure you always have enough money coming in from customers. You can conduct a thorough background check on a customer’s credit record before you allow them to do business with you. Additionally, you can impose a fee on customers who pay their bills late. This will be an incentive for them to pay on time in the future. Create an aging report of your accounts receivable to help you pinpoint “problem” customers. You are then able to send those customers notifications about what they owe you.

If you want to get the most out of your money, do business with suppliers who allow the longest payment terms at zero interest. The idea is to defer cash outflows as much as possible without sacrificing your credit standing. One way of doing away with the need to send money out days before bills are due is to arrange an electronic funds transfer (EFT) system with your bank. With an EFT, you can make payments the day they are due.

Knowing which of your products are fast, slow, or non-moving will help you decide which items to continue to carry and how much of certain products you need to retain for selling. It is also a good idea to know how much of a profit you are making from certain products. Inventory management software can help you with this. It is important to free up as much cash from your inventory as reasonably possible without affecting sales or production performance.

Mastering your cash flow is one of the most important facets of running your business. So, get to know your company’s specifics and be mindful of your accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory, and cash conversion cycle.

Every successful business will reach a point at which it needs to start expanding in order to meet its demand and to increase cash flow. Before doing so it is wise to diversify the income of the business as a safety net against failure of branches. It is also essential to make improvements through investment before expanding to make the system easier to manage when it is more dissipated. This 5 part guide will provide you with advice on preparing your company for expansion and diversifying your company’s income.

Re-injecting profits

When the profits of your company are large enough it is time to start looking at investment as a way of diversifying the income that it brings in. In order to expand a business it is important to have safeguards in place to protect the business for financial struggle should a new branch or arm not achieve what is expected of it. For businesses a wise choice is buying investment property off the plan. Buying off plan means that you are buying an unconstructed entity. Whilst this sounds potentially dangerous it does allow for rapid growth on an investment and is a tried and tested method for business investment. By buying off plan the purchaser will pay a lower price for prime property which can then be sold on at a much higher price once it is completed.

2. Letting go of the reigns

Before expanding you may wish to consider outsourcing some of your work. This would make your business more streamlined and manageable. By outsourcing you will pay less for someone to manage an element of your business for you. It is important to carry out regular checks on the standard of work produced when outsourcing and it is essential that the customer experience does not drop. However, outsourcing will lower your costs, take elements of management off your hands, and free up office space which you could then potentially rent out to other businesses.

3. Consultation

Once you have established a successful business you will find yourself with the opportunity to use your staff as consultants. Consultancy can bring in large amounts of money as well as help to promote the name of your company. When partaking in consultancy it is essential that you protect your trade secrets in every way that you can. Be sure to write clauses into contracts about trade secrets and make sure you have all intellectual property copyrights.

4. Enhancing

Improving your business is not as hard as you think. With a small investment from your profits you can invest in erp software which will help you to streamline the management and administrative processes within your company. This management system will make it easier for your staff to manage on a day-to-day basis and will simplify the whole system before your business becomes more dissipated through expansion. Simplifying your processes before expansion is vital because otherwise your business will breed bad habits, ingraining them into the minds of your staff.

5. Growing

Once you have finally improved your business systems and diversified your income you should start thinking about expanding. Remember to be careful when using mortgages to expand because failure to pay for one store could cost you all of them. Be sure that you do not expand too quickly because you will not be able to turn an immediate profit every time. Be sure that each store establishes itself before you consider expanding further because one unprofitable store can be manageable but three cannot.

Many businesses struggle with issues that requires special techniques. In any business the company is only as good as the person who runs it; this is usually the manager or the owner. The truth is many owners are not trained managers and they do not know how to run a business. This skill is normally found in people who have supervisory or managerial skills. For people on the other hand are troubleshooters. They come into an establishment and instantly start making changes to the business that is profitable and beneficial for both the staff and the customers. What they do is simple; they change management strategy and enforce new management policies.

Sometimes this action is necessary for the growth and development of a failing business. Some businesses fail because of poor management and others fail because of bad choices. However it takes someone with insight and vision to turn a failing establishment into a successful one. This includes changing the way the business is setup to run. This may include changing the hours of operation installing new and updated equipment or re-staffing the establishment all together. More times than often when new managers are placed into a working environment with left over staff members there may be a bit of hostility or rebellion. This type of negative feedback can affect the growth of a business.

This is why the majority of managers prefer to start their job at a new place of employment with new staff members. New staff is likely to follow rules and regulations without any complaints because the project change management imposes to them are new ideas in their eyes. Managers are special people with leadership skills and other qualities that owners look for. Meeting the needs of staff personnel and customers is a rewarding and tiring task. Implementing a new project change management system is not easy but it is effective.
