How To Become A Tattoo Artist

Now that tattoos are becoming mainstream, more and more people are looking into the art. They’re asking themselves “How do I become a tattoo artist” and where do I get the training? These are good questions to ask and as you’ll see shortly, thinking you’re talented and reality are two different animals sometimes!

I tell everyone who wants to get started in the tattoo business to find a good artist and ask them to mentor you. This is by far and away the best route to becoming a tattoo artist. Sure, there are schools that will teach you the basics, but a real artist who has been in business for many years will show you what it really takes to succeed in this very competitive business.

Obviously you have to be a talented illustrator. Being able to draw and being able to illustrate at a higher degree are two completely different things. Not everyone who can draw will become a tattoo artist.

Also, you may find out that what you consider “good” is not what a tattoo artist considers good. Just like the bozo’s on American Idol who think they can sing better than anyone else, only to find out they’re losers, you may discover that your skills aren’t enough to pay the bills!

The best way to avoid this is to take some of your artwork and visit some tatoo artist. Ask them to be frank and candid with you. Most of the time they will shoot straight with you, even if it means breaking your heart. You can also scan some of your work and post it to forums. But be warned. Someone may rip off your work this way. But at least you’ll find out what others think of your work.

Getting through tattoo artist school is a breeze. The real test is when someone decides to mentor you and set you up in their shop. Their livelihood depends on word of mouth advertising and repeat business. They’re not going to let just anyone start inking the second they walk in the door. Expect to have to pay your dues just like they did when they got started!
